Surprisingly, a lot of people aren’t clear about exactly what a home warranty is and what it covers. Depending on the warranty you purchase, you can cover a wide range of appliances and systems in your home. Choose your plan carefully. Some plans only cover your appliances, but not your major systems like heating/air conditioning. Many companies offer a “build your own” plan that lets you select just the items that apply to your home.
Here are some of the more common items that most warranties will cover:
- Air conditioning (be careful – not all companies will cover window units)
- Heating (most major types of heat)
- Water heaters
- Garbage disposals
- Ceiling fans
- Built in microwaves (not countertop units)
- Ovens and cooktops
A lot of plans also cover less common items. Select your plan carefully and read the fine print before you purchase. Many people have had bad experiences with their home warranty company simply because they didn’t purchase the right plan for their needs. If you have older appliances and an older home, a plan that covers both systems and appliances is probably right for you. If your appliances are mostly new, a plan that covers just systems might be a better choice.
